Main Cabin Extra seats on an American 777-300ER
American Airlines management said it is making progress on integrating American and US Airways, and announced it will begin to add premium economy seating with additional legroom on the latter’s planes.
American’s president, Scott Kirby, told analysts on the airline’s fourth quarter earnings call that it will introduce “economy comfort on the US Airways network, which we don’t have today.” Legacy American Airlines aircraft have Main Cabin Extra sections, a product that the carrier began to introduce in early 2012.
The airline did not say on which planes Main Cabin Extra will be added, nor did it provide a timetable for implementation.
Depending on the aircraft and seat location, Main Cabin Extra seats have 4″ to 6″ more legroom. On some aircraft, such as on the 777-300ER, which flies mostly long-haul international routes, the Main Cabin Extra seats are wider as well.
Both American and US Airways currently offer what American calls “Preferred Seating,” which offer the normal amount of legroom but a better location in the cabin. US Airways calls these ChoiceSeats.
Most larger airlines, including Delta and United, sell seats that are similar to Main Cabin Extra. They are typically available at no charge to higher-level elite members of an airline’s frequent flyer program.
