American Airlines, which purchased Cyprus Airways’ landing slot at London Heathrow, announced it will add a second flight from Charlotte to London in mid September.

American paid $31 million for the landing rights in June.   Cyprus said it will transfer its London flight from Lanarca International Airport to London Stansted Airport, with a change in both frequency and flight times.

The new flight will be operated by US Airways using an Airbus A330-200 that seats 20 in business class and 238 in coach.   The current Charlotte-London flight operates using an Airbus A330-300.

The flight, which will operate as US 730 and 731, the same numbers previously used for US Airways’ Charlotte to London Gatwick service before it switched to Heathrow, will depart Charlotte at 10:30 p.m. and arrive in London at 11:25 a.m.   The return flight will depart London at 2:25 p.m., arriving in Charlotte at 6:20 p.m.

In early June, American Airlines officials said that Charlotte would remain an important hub in the combined airline.   With over 650 daily flights, the airport is American’s second largest hub, although 80% of its traffic is from connecting passengers.
