American Airlines Group announced that its US Airways Group unit had merged with the company, marking an official end to the US Airways brand. As a result, American took over all US Airways operations and assumed all of US Airways’ liabilities and obligations as of December 30, 2015.
The Fort Worth-based carrier had merged all US Airways customer-facing operations with those of American Airlines by October 17, 2015 and it had obtained a single operating certificate from the FAA in April. Last week’s move marks one of the final steps in the 2013 merger of the two airlines, which formed the world’s biggest airline, although there are still some internal systems which will have not yet been merged or consolidated.
The combined airline has a fleet of 948 aircraft, largely comprised of Boeing and Airbus jets. The airline also has 338 aircraft on order from the two manufacturers.
The merger between the world’s third largest and fifth largest airlines was first announced in February 2013. US Airways’ final flight took place on October 17, 2015.
