American Airlines provided further details about US Airways’ final flight on October 17, 2015. The final flight will operate as Flight 1939, a number selected to commemorate the airline’s founding in 1939.
US Airways started as All American Aviation in that year, becoming Allegheny Airlines, USAir, and finally US Airways before its 2013 merger with American.
The carrier’s swan song will celebrate the airline’s major hubs by departing Philadelphia and stopping in Charlotte and Phoenix before its final destination, San Francisco.
The flight will be operated using an Airbus A321 in US Airways livery and American’s CEO, Doug Parker, will reportedly be on the nostalgic flight.
On October 17, the US Airways name and website will be retired and its airport signs and kiosks will start to carry the American brand. The Fort Worth-based airline said it has hired almost 2,000 workers to assist with the transition and will provide special training to over 10,000 employees.
Once the reservations system has been turned off, passengers booked on flights after October 17 will get a reservation with an American flight number.
In the last quarter century, numerous airlines have disappeared, some (including Northwest, Continental, and AirTran) through mergers, and others (including Pan Am, TWA, and Eastern) due to changes in the airline industry that they could not adjust to.
