Delta aircraft at LaGuardia during last month’s storm
After an almost spring-like reprieve from winter weather in many parts of the country, millions of people will be impacted by the season’s 20th major winter storm.
Multiple airlines have issued so-called travel waivers that allow flyers to change their flights to a later date and time without any penalty. As of Saturday at 8:00 a.m., the waivers are in effect for flights on March 2 through March 4 and issuing airlines include American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, US Airways, and Southwest Airlines.
Driving conditions will be hazardous in the impacted areas and numerous flight cancellations and delays are likely Monday.
Impacted airports include those located in many parts of Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
The storm began in California on Friday with heavy rain and mountain snow. As it moves in an easterly direction, the Midwest faces a major winter storm on Sunday, with an ice storm possible for the Ohio Valley, mid-Mississippi Valley, and Ozarks. From Sunday through Monday, heavy snowfall is expected from the Central Plains to the Northeast.
As the swath of snow moves east, accumulations will range from as much as a foot or more in Sierra Nevada, the mountains of Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana, as well as in more densely populated regions of western and southern Montana, northern and central Wyoming, and western South Dakota, to six inches or less in Nebraska and southern South Dakota, southern Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
From Sunday to Monday, heavier snowfall will leave a minimum of six inches from the Kansas Plains to Ohio, with local accumulations of more than a foot possible.
As the snow hits the Northeast on Sunday, expect heavy snowfall at times with accumulations of up to six inches of snow in southern New York state and southern New England south to the Mason-Dixon line. Local accumulations of over a foot are possible on Monday.
