US Airways announced a codeshare with Spanish carrier Iberia. The codeshare will initially apply to all transatlantic flights operated by the two carriers, with additional intra-European flights expected to be added to the agreement later this year.
Under the agreement, US Airways is able to place its code on all flights operated by Iberia between Madrid and Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. In addition, Iberia is allowed to place its code on US Airways-operated flights from 18 destinations in Europe to both Charlotte and Philadelphia.
As part of the agreement, members of the US Airways Dividend Miles and Iberia Plus frequent flyer programs are also able to earn and redeem miles on flights operated by either carrier.
In addition to the transatlantic flights, the agreement will be expanded to include flights from Madrid to 16 destinations throughout Spain and Portugal in the near future.
US Airways, which merged with American Airlines last year, is currently an affiliate member of a joint business venture between American and Iberia, Finnair, and British Airways. It will become a full member once its operations are fully integrated with American Airlines.
