American Eagle, American Airlines’ regional carrier, will get a new name and logo in 2014. The airline was originally slated to be spun off by American Airlines but those plans were put on hold when American parent AMR Corp. filed for bankruptcy in November 2011.
The news was first reported by the Dallas Morning News and is expected to be announced in the next few weeks.
The change in name and branding will come about “to distinguish ourselves” from other regional airlines that fly for American but are not owned by the airline, according to a memo sent by American Eagle president Pedro Fabregas to employees.
American Airlines completed its merger with US Airways in December, becoming the world’s largest airline. Currently, four other airlines, Chautauqua Airlines, ExpressJet, Republic Airlines, and SkyWest, provide regional service for American, and US Airways uses several regional carriers as well.
