American Airlines’ new and old livery
American Airlines, which merged with US Airways last month, announced it has begun to align customer benefits and programs, including its frequent flyer programs.
Starting Tuesday, AAdvantage and Dividend Miles members can earn miles on either airline and have them credited to their account. They can also redeem miles on either airline, and all travel on either airline will count towards status benchmarks on the member’s choice of airline.
Members with status on American and US Airways will gain several reciprocal benefits including access to first- and business-class check-in lines, priority security screening, and priority boarding. They will also have access to Preferred Seats, priority baggage handling, and will be able to check bags at no charge.
On the airline lounge front, members of the American’s Admirals Club and the US Airways Club will have access to the other lounge and American AAdvantage Citi Executive cardholders will gain access to US Airways Clubs.
Other changes effective Tuesday include the alignment of airport and online check-in timeframes for both airlines as well as new boarding announcements that will include members of both airlines’ frequent flyer programs.
American, now the world’s largest airline, also announced changes that it plans to implement shortly including a codeshare agreement between the two airlines, US Airways’ exit from Star Alliance and entry into the oneworld alliance, which will take place on March 30 and March 31 respectively, and the co-location of ticket counters and gates in Miami and Phoenix as well as at other airports.
The Dallas-based carrier plans to align its frequent flyer program policies, including upgrade policies, within the first quarter of the year.
