American Airlines announced new changes to its 2014-2015 international winter schedule. Beginning in October, the carrier will discontinue service to five European destinations from its New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia gateways, and will resume service beginning next spring.
On October 25, American will halt flights between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Dublin Airport in Ireland, between Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and Düsseldorf Airport in Germany, and between Philadelphia International Airport and Zurich Airport in Switzerland. The airline will resume its New York-Dublin and Chicago-Düsseldorf service on March 29, 2015, and its Philadelphia-Zurich service on April 14, 2015.
On February 5, 2015, the carrier plans to discontinue its Philadelphia-Rome service, with plans to resume flights between the two cities on March 5, 2015. Also on that date in March, America will discontinue its flights between Philadelphia and Barcelona, with service set to resume on March 29.
In addition, American plans to divide its service to Milano Malpensa Airport in Milan, Italy, between JFK and Miami International Airport. Beginning January 6, 2015 and ending March 28, 2015, the airline will offer four weekly flights between JFK and Milan, and three weekly flights between Miami and Milan.
Along with the upcoming changes, American had previously discontinued its service between Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Manchester Airport in England, on January 6, 2014. The airline plans to recommence these flights on March 29, 2015.
In addition to the changes to its European routes, American said it will begin new service to Viracopos International Airport in Campinas, Brazil in December. The carrier will offer three weekly flights from JFK, and daily flights from Miami to the Brazilian city.
Along with the changes in American’s network, the airline said it will discontinue US Airways service between Charlotte Douglas International Airport and São Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport on October 1.
