American Airlines, which moved its headquarters from New York to Fort Worth, Texas in 1979, may be on the move again.

The company’s CEO, Doug Parker, told reporters the airline is “just wondering” if a more suitable space might be available, following a talk at the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce earlier in the week.  American committed to keeping its headquarters in North Texas for three years following its merger with US Airways as part of an agreement with the Texas attorney general to settle the state’s antitrust challenge to the merger, so it is unlikely to move far in the short term.

The airline’s current headquarters is located close to Dallas/Forth Worth International Airport in two office buildings in the CentrePort office complex.  American and its 4,300 employees there occupy roughly 1.4 million square feet (130,000 square meters) of space.

The airline is looking at various locations although, as Parker said, a move is “not on the top of the list” of the airline’s priorities.  “There is no time limit whatsoever,” he added.

Following the merger, the airline relocated its Envoy Air subsidiary to Irvine, Texas to make room for former US Airways staff relocating to its headquarters from Arizona.  Space is reportedly still tight.

Earlier this year, American broke ground on a new $88-million operations center located in Forth Worth.  Once open, it will house more than 1,400 employees.
